FANTASTIC NEW CHILDRENS SHOW WILLIAM & SPARKLES MAGICAL TALES
LAUNCHES ON THE NINE NETWORK

SYDNEY Wednesday 3 March 2010: The Nine Network in association with production partner, Ambience Entertainment, are thrilled to announce that the contemporary and sparkling new childrens series, William and Sparkles Magical Tales, will air on The Nine Network from March 4, 2010.

William & Sparkles Magical Tales is an exciting new live-action childrens series that begins when a magical shooting star lands in an enchanted forest. On board are two captivating characters - Sparkles the Fairy and William the Wizard. The pair is set to delight pre-school children everywhere.

Magical Tales is an engaging new 46 x ? hour series specifically designed in consultation with pre-primary school educators to captivate and entertain the minds of pre-school children through the use of narrative story telling, colour, movement, music, delightful costumes and playful characters that combine to heighten the sensory experience for children.

In each episode the audience is invited into the enchanted world of Magical Tales with Sparkles the Fairy and William the Wizard who use their magical talents to solve problems, help their visiting friends and sometimes create mischief.

Inspired by classic fairytales, nursery rhymes and fables Magical Tales utilises characters, themes and traditional storytelling mixed with humour and funky music to give much loved characters and stories a contemporary twist.

The Nine Networks Director of Commercial Development, Martin Hersov said: We are thrilled to be working with Ambience Entertainment on this unique childrens program.

We were fascinated by the concept very early on and have enjoyed working on the development of the series. It will be great entertainment for children and their families Australia-wide.

Ambience Entertainments series producer on the series, Monica OBrien said: Channel Nine has been an extremely supportive partner to work with throughout the evolution of this enchanting new series.

The network is very focused on providing their young viewers with entertaining programs that capture their minds and inspire their imaginations.

After a nationwide audition process searching for the two leads, both performers were chosen for their singing, dance and drama skills, along with their believability as a Fairy and a Wizard.

Playing the role of Sparkles the Fairy is fresh talent Laura Murphy who is a classically trained musician and singer having studied at the Australian Institute of Music in Sydney.

Monica OBrien, commented on the casting: Laura is a fascinating new talent and has boundless energy and the perfect punk-rock attitude to portray Sparkles the Fairy.

Laura Murphy said: Sparkles the Fairy is not an ordinary fairy, she is not all soft and fluffy. She is contemporary, full of positive attitude and ideas, with a smattering of mischief about her that I really thought was fantastic. It has been an absolute joy bringing the character of Sparkles to life.

Sparkles the Fairys trusty side-kick, William the Wizard, is played by young up and coming Newcastle performer James Buckingham.

James is a former school captain at the Hunter School of Performing Arts and he has been a long time member of Newcastles renowned Young Peoples Theatre.

In 2007, James was voted the Newcastle City Councils Young Citizen of the Year for his outstanding achievement in drama and performance.

James has brilliant comedic timing and wonderful performance based training gained through his various roles on the stage in Newcastle coupled an impish charm that made him perfect to portray William the Wizard, said OBrien.

James Buckingham said: William is such a cool character to play. He is dynamic and extroverted and has an infectious and fun-loving personality that kids will really enjoy.

Guest spots from some of Australias most respected actors help bring the stories to life.

Barry Crocker plays Whirly Wizard, Australian theatre favourite Alan Flower pops in to play Papa Bear, international cabaret and music theatre star, Chelsea Plumley appears as the Queen of the Fairies and actor and musician Peter Fenton makes an appearance as Dave the Stave.
Music Composer on the series is Mo and Helpmann Award recipient Stephen Spud Murphy. Spuds impressive body of work spans over thirty years as musical director and arranger on some of the most successful musical theatre productions ever staged in Australia, his list of credits include; Evita, Buddy, Shout, Priscilla and Dusty.

Magical Tales airs on The Nine Network at 3.30pm from Friday March 5, 2010
